Masoor Dal / Red Lentil

This recipe is my children's favorite. Since it does not have too many spices added to it, the flavor of the lentil is enhanced. This is so easy to make because its a very simple recipe. I think it is the first recipe that my daughter tried when she left for college. We usually serve it with roti but it tastes delicious with French bread.
Servings: 4 yield(s)
Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup Red Lentil
  • 1/4 medium Onion (Chopped)
  • 1 medium Tomato (Chopped)
  • 1 Serrano pepper (Optional)
  • 1/4 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp Red chili powder
  • 1 tsp Salt (Adjust as per your taste)
  • 2 tsp Oil
Instructions
  1. In a pot add the oil. When the oil is hot add the cumin seeds to it.
  2. Once the cumin seeds turn brown, add chopped onions to this.
  3. When the onions turn slightly brown add the chopped tomato with the whole Serrano pepper (you can take it out once the lentil is cooked)
  4. After sauteing the onions and tomatoes for couple of minutes add turmeric, salt and red chili powder.
  5. When the spices are all mixed in add the washed lentils to the pot.
  6. Saute for a couple of minutes and add 2 1/2 cups of water. After it boils once on high heat. Cover the pot and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
  7. After about 10 minutes it should be cooked (Sometimes it might take longer depending on the daal. It should be soft when you put it in your mouth). Adjust water according to the consistency you like.
