Traditional Indian Bread – Roti or Chappati

Yields: 10 Servings Difficulty: Medium Prep Time: 10 Mins Cook Time: 2 Mins Total Time: 12 Mins

This is the staple bread, kind of like tortilla almost made everyday in a North Indian household. I love mine with some ghee on it, but it is entirely your choice. Do not worry if you cannot make it round as it tastes the same in every shape. Made out of whole wheat flour is very nutritious.

  • In a kneading bowl take the atta and mix salt and oil if used.
  • Add water while kneading the dough, little by little so you can judge how much water would be used
  • It should be kneaded and not be too sticky. If it is too sticky add some more atta. Let it rest for a while.
  • Take a small portion of the dough and roll it on a rolling board or a clean kitchen counter with a rolling pin. If it sticks you can sprinkle some atta
  • Place a tawa or a griddle on the stove. When it is hot place your rolled roti on it. Let it cook slightly on one side and then turn the side.
  • Next step, I like to use the stove directly as it gives a smoky flavor to the Roti. Use tongs to flip the sides. Once both sides are done spread some ghee and enjoy it hot with any of the Indian dishes.
